Not all website URL’s are fully SEO friendly; you can greatly increase the chances of attracting more visitors to your website by making the URL’s friendlier for the search engines to read.
Firstly, what is a URL?
A URL or Uniform Resource Locator is a technical way of saying an address for information on the Internet. If you hear URL, just think “address” or “location.”
- If you’re creating a document that you want to publish on the Internet, you use an absolute URL so that anyone — anywhere in the world — on the Internet can find the page.
- If you’re creating links to other files within the same folder or on the same server, you need to provide only a relative URL. Remember that you’re already in the same directory (or folder or general vicinity) as the file to which you’re linking.
All HTML documents can use URLs to link to other information. URLs, in turn, can point to many different things, such as HTML documents, other sites on the Internet, or even images and sound files. A backlink is also a URL.
How to create friendlier URL’s or Website addresses.
Moving on, let’s assume you already have a domain and website setup. A nice clean URL structure for the Search Engines to read would have a couple of the keywords in the URL, staying away from words such as “in” or “by” for example:
The Search Engines will be able to read those URL’s quite easily. They are clean URL’s. Now for some examples of not so great URL structures. Search engines will still be able to read them, however if you are looking for maximum exposure for your website, I would probably recommend against using examples below.
The point is you’re trying to keep your URL’s, clean, neat and tidy. This will give your website a better chance to rank higher in the search engines and to keep a clean URL structure.
WordPress is excellent for SEO Friendly URL’s
We’ve probably mentioned WordPress dozens of times in the Buoyancy Media blog, there’s a reason for it. It’s fantastic for creating SEO friendly URL’s without needing in-depth technical knowledge. You can even customize the page URL before publishing; remember to remove short words like “in” or “by”. You don’t need them!
Example of a WordPress URL: www.mydomain.com/plumbing-services
Is Wix SEO Friendly?
The answer to that question is yes and no. The url structure for Wix powered websites is terrible. Personally I hate Wix for promoting businesses online. Wix is great for small personal or hobbyist websites. However if you’re a business and looking to generate more enquiries online via digital marketing, stay away.
Example of a Wix url: www.mywixdomain.com/#services/cf433
Static HTML / PHP pages
If you are quite HTML savvy, the chances are you make want to create your website from scratch using HTML. You can craft perfect Search Engine friendly URL’s this way as you’re in complete control.

Final Thoughts / Tips
Hopefully you have learnt that little bit more today on ways to promote your website online. Good clean URL structures are an important aspect in promoting a website online.
In simple, the cleaner the URL structure and more focused greatly increases the change of ranking higher in the Search Engines.
If you provide multiple services and serve many different areas, I would recommend you create additional pages on your website. Some other SEO’s would advise against that, well my argument is if list too many services and area names on a single page, the content becomes heavily diluted and looks spammy and unnatural.
Keep it simple, use URLs like: servicename-areaname.html that way it stays focused and targeted.
Remember clean URL’s are also easy to share with friends, family, potential customers and most likely to attract backlinks over long spammy looking URL’s.
